There are a lot of specifications and characteristics that need to be mentioned when it comes down to the laser pointers. But one of the most important facts about them which just cannot remain unmentioned is the great variety of lasers available on the market. They can be red, blue, violet, green; focusable and non-focusable; small, medium and big; ordinary and kaleidoscope lasers; and the list can go on forever. However, there is no doubt that none of those specifications is as important as the lasers’ power.
It is the power of a laser pointer that determines what its range will be. Obviously, a powerful green laser pointer (or a laser pointer with any other color of the beam) will have a much better range than a 5mW laser pointer. Some people may think that range is not important because nobody uses the green lasers for anything important. However, that is not true at all. There are people who use the lasers as tools which can save their life. For instance, mountaineers often send SOS messages by violet lasers and if they used a 5mW laser instead of a 50mW, 250mW or 500mW one, their message would never be received by people in the nearby.
Actually, a 50mW green laser pointer is often considered as “averagely powerful” but not as a powerful one. So it is rarely preferred over the 250mW and 500mW lasers when it comes to such serious appliances. But the astronomers tend to use the 50mW lasers as they are powerful enough to reach the sky and all objects in it can be pointed. Pointing a start or any other object is very easy due to the laser’s dot’s small size. Even though all objects in the sky are really small (which is why pointing them by using a finger does not work), each of them can be pointed thanks to the perfectly visible and bright green dot of the 50mW green laser pointer. Of course if a laser is more powerful, it would be even easier but it is really unneeded, especially when the safe issue is taken into consideration. It should not be forgotten that the more powerful a laser pointer is the more dangerous it is to the human eyesight.
